Mid-Century Rattan & Bamboo Console Table in the Manner of McGuire Furniture

Description

Evoking the refined craftsmanship and organic elegance of McGuire Furniture, this vintage wood, rattan and faux bamboo console table is a time example of mid-century coastal sophistication. Crafted circa 1970s, the piece combines architectural form with natural materials, showcasing a gridded latticework top and cylindrical legs bound with rawhide leather lashing — a hallmark technique seen in McGuire’s signature joinery.

Constructed from thick bamboo poles and tightly woven rattan, the table base radiates warmth in a deep honey brown finish with subtle patina throughout. The design balances visual lightness with solid, enduring construction. The four cylindrical legs, joined by H-stretchers, lend the piece both stability and sculptural presence. The lattice top is designed to support a custom glass top (not included), allowing the detailed construction to remain visible and celebrated from all angles.

While unmarked, the craftsmanship and design language strongly echo that of 1970s McGuire Furniture, whose pieces have been revered for their integration of Old World technique with California modern style. “As relevant today as when John and Elinor (McGuire) founded their brilliant catalogue of rattan and bamboo inspired furnishings leading the ‘California Casual’ movement in 1948” from their San Francisco based studios.

Final Thoughts:
This versatile base functions beautifully as a hallway console, sofa table, or even a statement vanity when paired with a custom-cut glass or stone top. Its lightweight yet resilient frame makes it easy to reposition, while the artisanal binding and organic materials introduce warmth and textural interest to any environment — from coastal retreats to curated city interiors.See
