Description

This monumental bookcase is crafted from solid teak architectural elements carved in Rajasthan, India between 1880 and 1920 and later repurposed into a cabinet in the mid-20th century. It carries forward the artistry and symbolism of its original use in a haveli (mansion) or temple while offering modern function as a statement storage piece. The frieze presents hand-carved peacocks and parrots framed by scrolling foliage — classic Rajasthani motifs where the peacock symbolizes immortality, beauty, and protection. Lower panels display bold sunburst carvings that evoke renewal and cosmic order, while the robust corbels and block supports beneath the crown recall the architectural language of carved jharokhas (arched windows and doorways). Traces of the original indigo-blue pigment remain throughout. In Rajasthan, mineral-based washes such as indigo repelled insects, cooled interiors, and conveyed auspicious meaning. The surviving pigment, softened into the teak’s patina, is a rare and desirable feature that underscores the authenticity of the piece. The wood is solid teak (Tectona grandis), one of the world’s most prized hardwoods, valued for its density, durability, and natural oils that allow it to endure for centuries. Its golden-brown grain and smooth finish add to the cabinet’s presence and integrity.See
